Performing in Calgary
It’s still BH/FM and there’s another post from me! February has been my most busy month for a while and we know why, I’m Black, say it and will show up relatively on time. However in recent years busy has changed with how much I will endure and how much folx want to accept Black folx doing anything they like. This year I have been dedicated to MY experience with Black History Month and enjoying Blackness. Being booked and busy in BHM is great! Enjoying it is better. Decide what you want to do, and we can do both.
My last blog post included my public performances, I also did anti-Black racism training, and filmed my Youtube series Living a creative life. When I say my everyday is Black, it’s about loving being a Black person, but I do not often experience Black community with joy because of racism. We are often navigating microagressions, systemic and covert racism so time in the world to celebrate is golden.
Black Spaces Matter
My first performance was G-string, Burlesque to local live music. I love this show and lose myself in the music and audience. This event was a lil different, all Black, produced in support of BH/FM. An amazing way to start ENJOYING. The artists are stellar performers Tea Fannie and Alexis Meier sang and rapped their hearts out. I enjoyed myself so much I missed cues and forgot there was an ending to the song. My dance cast mates are fire! The audience played along with applause, interactions, tips and so much cheering!
The next night was Holi-gay weekend, my 1st time producing with this group, but I love them all dearly. Glitter Thug was in his element. GT, is my drag name, I’m notoriously big and cute IYKYK! Being active in many communities on different levels is very important to me and so beneficial in creating a Black queer space! I performed, hosted and ENJOYED this event on so many levels. Honestly this event deserves its own post, but as a teaser, the cast was stacked with many types of Blackness, talents and EVERY ONE OF THEM WAS INCREDIBLE! Boy/Burlesque, Drag, Poetry, Singing, Skate-esque a Black JOY show hands down is the best event I have had the honor to produce out of the comedy realm. My goal was to ensure these professionals were treated with care and valued. Black creators are too often and after thought booked last minute, underpaid, asked to compromise etc. I was emotional because this cast did whatever they liked and it was an honour to be able to bring them together…. more to come
Ending with IMPACT (bang!)
This weekend I will be performing at Odditease, a not so typical Burlesque group. So I’m doing something not so typical for me, headlining but more! This show is almost sold out, so if you don’t want to miss out get your tickets now.
I am a regular at Laugh loft, but this is my first headlining in BH/FM! Get your tickets. We all know I’m gonna show out. My fit is blue fiyah and I will say the things I gotta say. This month of Sunday’s has already been a riot!
Being able to focus on Joy for me has been eye opening. I have learned that celebration isn’t about excellence. Its so much more than “the best” or “the first” based on meritocracy… you knew it was coming, lol. It was about seeing each other as we are, knowing that this moment is to connect, acknowledge and progress. Having space to be ourselves, free to be and knowing we will be better than ok because we did so. Celebration has been withheld too long for folx in the margins. I’m celebrating existing, no hierarchy necessary to make noise and be joyful. Next on the to do list, take over the world so cease fire, everywhere (JK, I don’t need to take over the world to impact)
